![]() The primary questions to ask here are: who are you monitoring? what are you monitoring? Where are you monitoring? When are you monitoring? Productive vs. One of the things to be considered is where an employee’s time is being spent. One ethical question starts to become at which point does employee monitoring impose on their personal privacy? It depends of course on the means of how you apply the employee monitoring. With a variety of tools at your disposal will you monitor every keystroke, every email, every mouse movement? Will there be exceptions such as when they’re on their personal bank accounts? These questions come up often which reveal some of the flaws of a pure “ends justify the means” approach towards security. The most important stakeholder beyond yourself here are your employees, whose labor hold up the organization. Is it to mitigate insider threats? Protect critical assets? Process optimization? It is important to understand why you seek to monitor employees as it sets the ethical foundation when you work with stakeholders to carry out your plan. Before rushing to monitor employee it is important to consider why you seek to do so. Employee Monitoring & Ethical Considerationsĭo the ends justify the means? This line is common when questions about security arise in organizations, however by not questioning the means of implementation, monitoring policy, impacts, or even legal violations some organizations can find themselves in trouble. This often results in poor guidance for respecting employees and siloing security off from the other ethical considerations of business and government. When it comes to security it is very common that writers will briefly touch on ethics, and often it is from a purely teleology perspective. Something such as always being truthful for example, could be considered right. The most important factor here is consistency of action. Under the deontological prism, an action can be ethically good even if it produced a negative consequence. Meanwhile, the deontological perspective of ethical consideration places actions and motives as the primary basis for what is right and wrong. ![]() In other words, under this view the “ends justify the means.” the ethical action under this view is which ever produces the most effective outcome for the most people. Teleology (utilitarian) is a form of ethical consideration that places the consequences or outcomes as the central basis for moral judgement. Resolving these ethical tensions is a common challenge we all face and as a result we develop forms of processing these tensions. For example you (micro ethic) may value liberty and freedom at all costs for society, but employee monitoring as a practice (meso ethic) could conflict with your personal view. Wherever these spheres of ethics interact we face greater tension in our decision making. Both of which are important to understand when it comes to a topic such as employee monitoring.Įthics is never really a consistent exercise for most people as we all operate within three spheres of ethics: micro (personal), meso (organizational), and macro (sector-wide/society). When people, institutions, or society is considering how to act in a given situation there are two popular forms of ethical consideration, teleology and deontological. Linda Elder who are both leading authorities in the fields of ethics and critical thinking. Ethics can simply be defined as “ a set of concepts and principles that guide us in determining what behavior helps or harms sentient creatures” according to Dr. So let us begin! What are Employee Monitoring Ethics?īefore diving into the ethics of Employee Monitoring it is important to define very quickly what ethics are, and what context we will explore them through here. By the end of this article you should have new questions and frameworks to explore this topic through. This article will explore the ethics, legal considerations, and impacts of employee monitoring. Exploring the ethics of employee monitoring can help you to understand whether you should monitor at your organization, if so then how you will implement employee monitoring. Employee monitoring has produced a lot of positive contributions to organizations, however as tools have advanced so too has the complexity of negative impacts as well. While most employers are well within their rights to monitor activity that occurs within their business, there are both legal and ethical considerations to keep in mind. It has become common understanding among people that when they begin work at an organization, there is a high chance that their activity will be monitored. ![]() The Captain thinks the mermaids are a hallucination and asks if it is possible that they are real, but then dismisses it. In The Third Age, the game that Game of Thrones most reminds me of, the elf character Idrial casts all manner of different spells, corresponding with how most RPGs work, despite the relative lack of regular magic in the Lord of the Rings novels and films. At this level, it's relatively minor nitpicking, but it can escalate throughout games. ![]() While a two-handed weapon wielding Hedge Knight and sword and shield combo-focused Landed Knight makes a certain kind of sense, these restrictions are opposed to the show's depiction of Ned Stark and Gregor Clegane. Yet some of the choices conflict with established imagery from the novels and HBO series. Fans of the show will immediately recognize the Water Dancer, posed like Arya's memorable teacher Syrio Forel or the Sellsword, reminiscent of Tyrion's deadly right-hand man Bronn. The Magnar's dual weapons look great as a visualization for readers of the books. There are six classes in the game, and some of them will trigger immediate reactions for fans. Cyanide's Game of Thrones demonstrates this almost immediately in its character customization screen. One of the main problems with adapting something into a game from another medium is that it's essentially impossible to keep the adaptation completely true to the spirit of the source material. It keeps pace with some older, competent adaptations like last generation's Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, but it falls well short of the very best adaptations, namely, Betrayal At Krondor. The Game of Thrones RPG from developer Cyanide struggles to deal with both, succeeding in some respects, while failing at others, as pointed out in the Joystiq review. There are two major, though interconnected, issues for video game adaptations: authenticity and pacing. But adaptations can be difficult to execute successfully. Improvements in technology and more licensing meant that adaptations of different media, specifically film, have become more prominent over the course of game history. It may not be a stretch to say that many early RPGs were attempts at playable novels. And all you need to do is look at the elves, hobbits, orcs, and trolls of early and more modern RPGs to see the Lord of the Rings influence. What is Dungeons & Dragons if not an attempt to simulate Lord of the Rings? Many other role-playing systems, both tabletop and electronic, are built off of the D&D model, as well. The role-playing game structure is, in many ways, built as an adaptation. High-frequency information is wholly resolving and operates with sweet details that come off with an airy texture. In the treble region, the Chu offers what I think is its greatest attribute. Higher resolution in these frequency bands can express this sensation more effectively, and the Chu finds a way to provide that successfully. The clarity in the upper mids best showcases the Chu’s separation performance, making the soundstage feel more spacious than it may seem. This leaves the low-mids feeling a bit weak, but their presence is never fully eliminated from the frequency range completely. Tonally, the midrange seems to favor the upper mids, making this a crisper timbre that accentuates many different instruments and vocal performances throughout the response. Bass instruments have a clear and persistent form, which gives the sound signature a bit more snap than your average pair of earphones at this price. There isn’t much to the content of the bass frequencies, but they have a strong layer of sub-bass that can lift the lows more substantially than you would expect. I wasn’t expecting much power of drive from these lows, but I was more surprised by its quickness and control. Everything falls into the right place, and that’s as much as you can expect for a twenty-dollar IEM. These gripes would be much more considerable when dealing with a much pricier IEM or even a headphone, but when regarding the Chu these criticisms can be more minor than anything, as the positive soundstage abilities of the Chu outweigh anything else from its price. It is as if there is no central foundation to the soundstage that glues everything together, resulting in true mono elements appearing hollow and lacking impact. They rarely appear in a great scale though, which makes some instruments and vocals sound a little too thin. Separation is surprisingly articulate throughout its output, giving each section of musical positioning a clear identity in the mix. It is a wholly linear and traditional stereo sound field, but the Chu poses a wide area for the elements to play in. Sensitivity: 120dB/Vrms Impedance: 28Ω +/- 15% not betting on a soundstage that will blow me away for a pair of twenty-dollar IEMs, but what is stopping a company like Moondrop from doing so? After some significant time with the Chu, I think the soundstage and spatial imaging perform with an entirely respectable quality that still separates itself from any other pair of earphones for its price. It also uses an N52 neodymium magnetic circuit and a Patented anti-blocking acoustic filter. Inside the Chu is a 10mm dynamic driver, with a titanium-coated diaphragm and an ultra-black CCAW sound coil. I think the Chu feels comfortable either way, but using the ear hooks was my preferred wearing style. During my time with the Chu, I wore the earpieces with the cable both around my ear like a traditional IEM, and straight down. You won’t see a lot of twenty-dollar earphones use this specific metal material for their housing, and it also gives the Chu a weightier feel. Its outer casing has the same feel as the Aria, but with a smaller shell. The Chu is simplistic without losing its Moondrop feel. 3.5mm termination w/non-removable cable. Are the Moondrop Chu’s worth it? What You Get There has been some hype surrounding the Chu, which I haven’t seen a lot of for such a low-priced set of earphones. Most audiophile types don’t bat an eye at anything in this price range, but the Chu has caught a lot of people’s attention since its launch. Since I last reviewed a Moondrop product, the acclaimed brand has released their most cost-effective IEM yet with the twenty-dollar Chu. So these are the Moondrop Chu’s I have been hearing so much about. ![]() I'm not going to tell you that you should use American Steel to circumvent your range rule against steel cased ammo, but I will say that you could probably use it for that purpose. With prolonged use I expect the gun to be dirtier than the same with traditional ammunition. ![]() Long term use will tell the tale.įreedom Munitions using a brass plating doesn't mean that the casing expands like brass, but since it's using American powder and primers it's still far cleaner than most all other steel cased ammo you'd be using. I was unable to find any signs of brass shavings or other debris in the weapons used. I'm told that this doesn't cause any additional wear and tear. These bits follow the round down the barrel and mix with the burning powder. Since the casings are plated inside and out, some microscopic bits of the brass inside flakes off during combustion. It's surprising the first time you see it. It's noteworthy to mention that the muzzle flash is very sparky. I didn't experience any issues with function or feeding, nor would I expect to with just a few hundred rounds. Some formal accuracy testing with a bench may be warranted in the future. I am by no means a precision Olympic 50m Pistol shooter but just casually shooting offhand at 10m produced results I wasn't disappointed with. The recoil seemed exactly on par with Freedom's remanufactured line and also with a number of other American commercial loads. ![]() I loaded a pile of pistols, some targets, and several hundred rounds of American Steel into my range bag and headed to find out. No doubt it's boxer primed because all of their machines are setup for it already. Although this means it could possibly be reloaded, I'm advised that Freedom Munitions doesn't recommend it. Normal storage or transport like rolling around in your range bag is unlikely to cause any issues.Īmerican Steel is also boxer primed. I used a tool to intentionally scrape one up and you can see the raw steel beneath. Not all of the brass received is suitable for reloading and would otherwise be sold as scrap. But why brass? I don't know for sure but I have a theory: As a company that collects spent brass from ranges across the nation, if there's one thing Freedom Munitions has in bulk, it's brass. It serves the same purpose of protecting from moisture and giving a slicker surface for feeding and extraction. It's still much better than a raw steel case.Īs mentioned, what Freedom did instead of a lacquer or polymer coating was plate brass directly to the steel. And though some might protest that last bit, lacquer doesn't melt and cause stuck cases-the fact that steel cases don't fully expand to the chamber and therefore allow for more fouling, does. The coating is to help prevent environmental fouling (untreated and exposed steel can rust very quickly) and to aid in feeding and extraction. ![]() Generally steel cased ammo, aside from being foreign and cheap, is coated with a lacquer or polymer and is berdan primed. Aesthetically I can't tell the difference between American Steel and any other old ball round (if anything I found the Freedom offering to be shinier than most). Freedom's American Steel line is just like any other new production ammo-it's just that the case itself is steel that's plated with brass. They're calling it American Steel, and admittedly the name does have a nice ring to it. ![]() You just have to feed the generator with keywords or phrases you want the lyrics about, and it does the rest for you. When you feel forced to use a mechanic that reduces the amount of fun you’re having, something is clearly not working the way it was intended to. Those waves upon waves I’ve been mentioning repeatedly? Without making strategic use of the Strike Suit, defeating their near limitless numbers simply can’t be done. It’s also impossible to complete missions without making use of the Strike Suit. It’s odd that the central mechanic can feel so out of place. The Strike Suit can move, but only slowly and without any of the grace and fluidity present while piloting a regular ship. The sense of speed and freedom of space flight evaporate and are replaced by what is essentially an overpowered turret. However, once transformed, movement grinds to a halt. Allowing the player to essentially morph into a Gundam is really cool and the first few times it happens are great. On paper, the idea of the Strike Suit is solid, but in execution… not so much. It only loses it’s edge once you’re forced to fight the same battles time and time again. Aiming is a little wonky and targeting your preferred enemy means hitting Circle until you cycle through all available targets, but for the most part fighting feels fast, fluid and fun. It nails the feeling of flying in space with a great sense of weight and inertia carrying you through the cold dark abyss. Once the game gets going and you’re busy destroying hundreds of enemy ships the story gets lost. The narrative, while hardly original, is intriguing enough to keep you interested at least in the short term. A trifle. Each and every mission requires you to carry out almost identical actions and with little variation on top of the nearly endless spawning enemies the game quickly grows tired.
